CHAPTER 5

I was grateful for the ship’s running water. A hot shower felt good, along with a hot meal and plenty of sleep. When I woke up we were in the Arendi system. The planets were inhospitable, but the system was home to a trade center. I’ll admit I was shocked by the existence of a huge space station full of aliens buying and selling goods from different worlds. It was a shock to me that Usk would be welcomed in such a place. To me he was monstrous; a hideous creature who instilled fear in those who saw him. I also knew him to be smart and powerful in the control of divine magic. But there was much about the universe I still needed to learn.

“What is this place?” I asked the Vanj when I reported in the next morning.

“Arendi,” he replied. “Here we will resupply and prepare for your final trial.”

“Are the Scion heretics here?” I asked, suddenly feeling very uncertain about the test.

“No,” Usk replied simply.

I felt a little better. Fighting was something I was familiar with, and even good at, but it was hard not to fear that the Scion warriors were more dangerous than anyone I had ever fought. And while I felt better physically after my second trial on Fierocite, I wasn’t ready to be thrown into my final trial right away.

Usk gave me instructions and a bag of coins. He docked the ship and had the batteries that worked the vessel’s life support systems recharged. I went aboard the space station and paid for the services. It was a simple exchange. We didn’t need liquid fuel, but we did get the ship’s air and water tanks topped off. Once I paid the dock workers, I had a full hour to explore the station. Everywhere I looked there were kiosks with vendors selling goods of all kinds. I barely made one loop around the lowest deck before I needed to get back on Usk’s ship. It was a wonderland of diversity, and there was so much to see and try. Food of all kinds, clothing, weapons, armor, games, and all sorts of devices for entertainment. But the most common goods were those for ships: parts vendors with common vessel upgrades, boosters, shield generators, atomic converters, power generators, even food prep machines. Maybe the most incredible thing of all were the robots. Most looked like bulky machines, but they moved and performed a variety of functions. I could have spent hours watching them. The bots did everything from ship repairs to simple cleaning.

It was the most incredible place I had ever seen. There were vendors from different planets. Some looked similar to me, but most were completely different. Some wore breathing masks, and others suits that covered their entire bodies. Everything was displayed in the Common language. I could read and understand all the different beings from different planets.

There were more vendors on the upper levels of the space station, along with a casino and entertainment deck.
